Artist Statement
My studio is behind the red, front door of my home. It’s a place where I recharge my batteries and take a break from a world that seems to sometimes have less and less of a sense of humor. Here, I create my own, personal universe with canvas, colorful paints and a brush. One that is fun to be in, full of thingamajigs, whatchamacallits and doohickies.
Since I can put anything I want into my universe, I choose images and ideas inspired by past memories and current events that appeal to my slightly offbeat sense of humor. A childhood toy, a Greek myth, a cowboy I once met, a friend eating fish n’ chips, a trip to the dentist, my hammer, a woman in a fountain all reside within the paintings you’ll see hanging in this show.
To maintain this spontaneity, I forgo most of the formal techniques pertaining to composition and color that I’ve used for years in favor of drawing and painting as quickly and as simply as possible. To stay working “in the moment”, my number one rule has become: “there are no rules”. And I can do this because, after all, this is my universe.
